Historical Note: Dr. Stephen David Cushman was born in Boston, MA on August 16, 1938.  He attended prepatory school at Phillips Exeter Academy (1956), received a B.A. in Music (1960) from Harvard College, M.Mus in Church Music (1962) from the New England Conservatory (major instrument-organ), and Ph.D. in Musicology (1973) from Boston University.  His doctoral dissertation was titled "Joseph Haydn's Melodic Materials: An Exploratory Introduction to the Primary And Secondary Sources Together with an Analytical Catalogue and Tables of Proposed Melodic Correspondence and/or Variance."  He was conductor fo the Glee Club at Exeter Academy (summer school 1960-63, 1965-69), teaching fellow at New England Conservatory (1960-62), Teaching Associate at Boston University (1967-72), Music Minister at Rugles St. Baptist Church (1960-70) and United Presbyterian Church (1972-75). Prior to coming to Wheaton, he was active as an organ recitalist for about 20 years and a scholar in the performance of continuo realization, prepared and improved. He was a member of the American Guild of Organists (Boston Chapter), and American Musicological Society. After teaching for 15 years, he retired from his position as tenured Professor of Music at the Wheaton College Conservatory of Music (1975-1990) due to health reasons.  Former Dean of the Conservatory, Harold Best remarked about Dr. Cushman's departure, "your 15 years at Wheaton have been years of stellar accomplishment. You have brought to this Conservatory and example of absolutely first rate professional musicianship. You are an example of what a musicologist should be. Throught your significant achievements in teaching, performing, composing, and researching, you have shown me, my colleagues and your students, exactly what the best Christian musicianship should comprise." He currently lives with his wife, Wasthi in Briggsville, WI and has two adult sons.
