Payne, Leanne (1932-) | Archival Collections at Wheaton College

Name: Payne, Leanne (1932-)

Historical Note: Born on June 26, 1932, Leanne Payne spent her early life in Little Rock, Arkansas. Two factors set her life in its unique course—her father’s tragic death when she was three years old, followed by her mother’s transforming relationship with God. Later, caught up in the renewal movement sweeping mainline denominations in the sixties and seventies, she followed the spiritual path her mother blazed. For her education Payne came to Wheaton College, receiving a B.A. in English literature in 1971. After a research scholarship to work on the writings of C.S. Lewis with Professor Clyde Kilby, founder of The Wade Center at Wheaton College where Lewis’s manuscripts are archived, she earned an M. Ed. from the University of Arkansas and later an M.A. in Christian leadership from Wheaton College. She was a research fellow at Yale Divinity School. She has taught in the graduate program in Christian Spirituality at Creighton University as well as University of the Nations. In 1981 she started the Pastoral Care Ministry to bring together Christian ministers, priests, caring professionals, and lay people to learn how to move as channels of God’s healing grace. Her vision has been to see the full understanding of the healing power of the gospel, as experienced by the early church, restored to the church today. In her books and conferences she points out the obstacles—the rationalistic, materialistic mind-set of our culture, which she believes pervades the church. As a result Christians suffer from a split between the head and the heart. The answer is to learn once again to listen to God and then to begin to move in His authority and power. Here is a vivid record of lives transformed through practicing God’s presence. Mrs. Payne has been active in the ministry of healing prayer for over thirty years. She is the founder and president of Pastoral Care Ministries. Her books include: Real Presence, The Broken Image, Healing the Homosexual, Crisis in Masculinity, Healing Presence, Restoring the Christian Soul, and Listening Prayer. She has taught for Wheaton College, in the graduate program in Christian Spirituality at Creighton University, as well as for University of the Nations. She holds both a BA and MA from Wheaton College as well as an MA from the University of Arkansas. Mrs. Payne was also a research fellow at Yale Divinity School. She died on Ash Wednesday, February 18, 2005 at age 82.
