A collection of items, including a note from President Abraham Lincoln, relating to the service of George S. Low, of Gloucester, a soldier in Company F of the 35th Regiment of the Massachusetts Volunteers.

Folder 1: Letter from Mr. A. C. Low, Gloucester, Massachusetts to President Abraham Lincoln, 1862 December 20: A four page (1 leaf) letter from Mr. A. C. Low, Gloucester, Massachusetts to "President Abram Lincoln" containing a request from Mrs. Low, that her son, George S. Low, be discharged from active service in the 35th Regiment of the Massachusetts Volunteers. A transcription accompanies the letter.
Folder 2: Envelope addressed to "The President Abraham Lincoln": An envelope addressed to "The President Abraham Lincoln" on which is Lincoln's short response to Mrs. A. C. Low's request that her son, George S. Low, be discharged from active service in the 35th Regiment of the Massachusetts Volunteers. A transcription accompanies the letter. Lincoln's signed and dated handwritten note states that "If the boy is sick in this case he must be dealt with as other sick are dealt with by the rules. Of course I can not discharge a soldier merely because a mother asks it. There would soon be no army. A. Lincoln Dec. 20, 1862"
